Maximum Zuzel: Journeys to the Centre of the Speedway Universe

Maximum Zuzel: Journeys to the Centre of the Speedway Universe is the first English-language book to sample the ingredients that zhuzh up and flavour contemporary Polish speedway in all its raw, thrilling, colourful and captivating glory.

Polish speedway inspires devotion, passion and elaborate vibrant displays of support that go hand-in-hand with the professionalism, talent, organisation and artistry of the riders to create experiences that are often memorable, always bespoke and sometimes overwhelming.

With its strong sense of place, tribal loyalty and joyful belonging, zuzel burns brightly throughout Poland. High-speed thrilling races in often impressive stadiums take big crowds on compulsive, sometimes wild rides that, invariably, keep them coming back for more.

From terraces and stands to the pits, media walls and hospitality suites, Jeff Scott joins in the fun. He visits every track to discover zuzel as it is lived, discussed and experienced while also trying to find out the secret recipes that dictate how the Polish speedway sausage gets represented, funded and made.

In order to try to discover more and understand zuzel to the maximum, Scott travels extensively (including 8000 kilometres on Polish railways) and enjoys a wide variety of conversations and speedway meetings. Chance encounters with those that make up the wonderful world of zuzel in contemporary Poland abound including with riders, fans, journalists, media officers, marketing staff, tour guides, team management, a former speedway girl, a mechanic, a speedway artist, riot police, stadium staff, hospitality workers, photographers, ultras, social media influencers, an ice cream man, club executives, passersby, announcers, strangers and a nun.
